What are Facing Lathes Used For?

Facing lathes are mainly used to produce smooth surfaces on components. They are best suited for large and heavy workpieces. The workpiece is turned into the desired, precise level of smoothness using a a slow rotation speed. Large-formed components with exact, smooth surfaces are usually used for the construction of special machines. The manufacturing of large machines, like diesel engines or screws for ships, and large machine tools or dump trucks can be created with the help of a facing lathe.

What is the Structure of a Facing Lathe?

A facing lathe is one of the biggest machine tools used for general machine construction. For safe operation, it requires a particularly stable foundation, which has to be several cubic metres of strong cement. On that, there is a machine support weighing several tonnes, that is made out of cast iron. In terms of their structure, they are not that different than conventional lathes. However, all the components found on a conventional lathe are much bigger and more stable on a facing lathe. The clamping claw of the spindle allows for workpieces over 800mm to be processed. The width of the workpiece can be up to several metres. Several bezels are used to to ensure that the operation remains vibration-free when processing long workpieces.

What Types of Facing Lathes are Available?

Facing lathes are mainly differentiated by the size of their spindle. Starting at around 800mm, the rotating plate and the whole machine can be over 6 metres. Just like all types of cutting machines, facing lathes also require a lot of cleaning and maintenance.
